André Michel’s artistic approach is characterized by an ongoing dialogue between artistic creation and social engagement. From the early 1970s onward, the artist directed his practice beyond a strictly formal exploration, placing the human being at the center of his work—a choice that has shaped his entire career. He thus began a reflection on the representation and place of Indigenous peoples in society.
For nearly eighteen years, he shared the daily life of Innu communities in northern Quebec, and later throughout the three Americas, documenting a way of life in transformation. He produced field sketches that later became oil paintings. These works, recognized for their ethnographic value, have been exhibited internationally.
The pandemic changed everything.
Since then, the artist’s practice focuses on materiality, color, gesture, and spontaneity. His recent works explore the notion of “Living Natures”, evoking the cycles of the material world while redefining the tradition of still life.
